About these numbers

What the totals mean

Spending is Total Managed Expenditure (TME): all current and capital spending by central government, local government and public corporations across the UK. Income is public sector current receipts: taxes, National Insurance and other income. Both cover the financial year from April 2025 to March 2026.

Why borrowing looks slightly different

The spending breakdown comes from the Treasury's July 2026 analysis, which puts total spending at £1,360.1bn. The ONS revised this to £1,365.6bn in September, which is why official borrowing is £134.3bn (4.4% of GDP) rather than the £128.8bn gap between the two headline totals used in the explorer.

How the drill-down is built

Spending follows the UN's functions of government (COFOG), the codes shown on each area, as published by the Treasury. Below that, benefits come from DWP's latest estimate, the NHS England split from its 2025-26 allocations, taxes from the ONS's detailed receipts table, and who pays income tax from HMRC's income tax liabilities statistics. Where sources don't meet exactly, the difference is shown as its own labelled block, so every level adds up.

Small print

  • A few items are negative (for example net EU receipts, or tax repayments). They can't be drawn as boxes, so they're listed under the area they belong to.
  • Per-person figures use the ONS mid-2025 UK population of 69.5 million; household figures use 29.0 million households (ONS, 2025).
